Decorating on a Dime

VIDEO: Who doesn’t love decorating on a dime? I’m always amazed at how much you can elevate a space with just a few frugal tweaks. If you’re looking to give your bedside table a mini-makeover, these simple and easy tips can be implemented right now! Big thanks to my uber-talented designer friend, Lindsay Agnew. She’s always helping me make things look even prettier.

1. Collect some pretty papers that coordinate with your room’s decor.

Scrapbook papers are ideal, but gift wrap or wallpaper could work well too! Wrap a short stack of books with the papers and place them in a pile on your table.

2. Find a cheap knick-knack from a thrift shop or dollar store.

This chachka should have a cute shape, but doesn’t necessarily need to look gorgeous. When you get the item home, spray paint it with a couple of coats of white paint. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to transform an ugly knick-knack into a contemporary object! I actually like to use straight up primer for this because the colour and texture ends up quite similar to some of the more expensive decor items you’re seeing on store shelves right now. Not to mention, primer sticks to almost anything and goes on quite even.

3. Repurpose a glass soda bottle into a stylish water carafe.

Just fill the bottle with water and then overturn a drinking glass on top. Voila! In two easy steps you’ve created a practical item for your bedside and it took even less than a dime to do it!
